human cadaver showing the upper back trapezius muscles, the midline nuchal ligament and the aponeurosis attachments of the trapezius forming an ellipse of connective tissue between the shoulder blades.

The nuchal ligament (ligamentum nuchae) lies midline between the trapezius muscles.

Nuchal and Supraspinous Ligaments

There is a tendinous ellipse of connective tissue between the shoulder blades where the left and right trapezii meet midline.

A lamina of connective tissue connects the top of the trapezii to the base of the skull.
